Debt Collection Techniques
Most of your customers will pay you back when you ask them to, perhaps even sooner. You could spend years dealing with customers, sending them invoices, and expecting payments and it’s very possible that you won’t have any problems at all. However, it is extremely likely that at some point in the lifespan of your business, you are going to have problems with debt collection. Sometimes, your customers or clients will simply not have enough money to pay you back, or it could be the case they just don’t feel the need to pay you back promptly. Whatever the reason, debt collection can cripple your business and is a slippery slope that you do not want to start sliding down. In order to procure the payment that is owed to you, there are various things that you can do, various techniques that you can use, and various people you can talk to. Don’t assume that it is entirely the fault of your customer that they have not paid you. It could be that they are in a similar situation and are waiting for payment to come through, or they may not have received your invoice when they should have. It is important to ensure that your invoicing was completed properly and that there are no external factors stopping your customer from realizing that payment is due. If you are certain that something is amiss, then it’s time to start taking action by sending reminders to your customer regularly. Do this every week or slightly more often, but don’t simply bombard them with letters or e-mails. A good guideline is to take into account how long it would be take for your customer to reply; once that time has passed, then leave another day before sending another reminder. This ensures that you aren’t harassing them but are making it clear that you are unhappy with their behaviour. If the reminders are repeatedly ignored, the next step is to get on the phone and try to talk directly to your customer. This is an important part of the process, since it will generally tell you whether the situation is going to be resolved, or if your customer is deliberately avoiding you and is not interested in paying. It is vital not to be abusive or aggressive when talking on the phone, since it could well be used as evidence against you if the situation becomes a difficult legal battle. Try to remain calm and be professional throughout any contact or correspondence with your customer, this will be a useful trait to call upon if you end up in court. At this point, assuming no resolution has been achieved, you should look to hire a debt collection agency to take the process further. The agency will look to use various techniques in order to retrieve the money that is owed to you, and they will fully understand the legal implications of the situation. They will generally have a high success rate of collecting debts that are overdue, and will have their own special techniques to do this. Some people are reluctant to call a debt collection agency, for many reasons. However, a successful agency will always be extremely professional and will understand what is required in order to get the job done. They will not use aggressive tactics and will know exactly how to react to different situations as they develop. Debt collection can be a tricky process and embarking upon it yourself can be treacherous, so it is best to leave it to the professionals. These problems are almost impossible to predict, and previously fantastic business relations can turn sour very quickly because of unpaid debt. If you remain professional throughout these problems, you’ll find that you will almost always retrieve the money that is owed to you in the end. In order to reduce the amount of hassle and stress that you can put yourself under, ask a professional for advice on the situation and look to reach an amicable solution before things spiral out of control. contact us or complete the form below. |
